Class AAA final

Delaware Valley and Abington Heights are very familiar with each other.

For the third straight time, the two programs will play for the District 2 Class AAA volleyball championship tonight at 5 p.m. at North Pocono High School.

"They have a great program," Abington Heights coach Dan Phillips said. "It's three years in a row that we meet in the final. We are hoping to not go 0-3."

Delaware Valley, which has won three straight district titles, has already beaten the Comets in the regular season, 3-1.

"We have to be on," Delaware Valley coach Bridget Crawford said. "We certainly have to use our serving as key and play much better defense than we did last time.

"They are a very scrappy team and they play very well together."

In that first meeting this season, Delaware Valley capitalized on several service errors by the Comets and withstood a loss in the third game to come away with the victory.

Chelsea Malzahn led the Warriors with 13 points and five aces, and 17 kills. Melissa Nieves added 10 points and 11 digs.

"We made a lot of errors in that first match," Phillips said. "In the second game, we had the lead and I'm not sure what happened, it just got away from us. We started to get flustered.

"We have to know that mistakes are going to happen and we have to stay away from unforced errors. We have to play aggressive and make adjustments."

Abington Heights was led by Maggie Fruehan's 10 kills and seven points, while Meghan Fraley had 24 assists and Shelby Morgan added eight kills and seven digs.

Class A final

Lackawanna Trail is coming off a win over Forest City. The Lions have been led by Ashley Loss, who had 10 service points, five aces and five kills against the Foresters, Larissa Booth and Elizabeth Stuenzi.

"We are really excited," Loss said. "We don't know much about them. We are going to have to work as a team, come together and work off our strengths and not make mistakes."

MMI Prep upset the No. 1 seed, Mountain View in the semifinals.

Brone Lobichusky had 24 kills, seven blocks and three aces in the victory.

That was not an upset when MMI beat Mountain View. The teams up North do not play as tough a schedule as the teams further South and truthfully should not be rated as the No.1 seed. The same goes for the boys volleyball season. When is the last time you have seen a team from the North beat a team from the South in any volleyball championship, you haven't!!! It is about time District Two Officials recognize that seedings should be done by strength of schedule. When a 4th seeded team comes in and handily beats the No 1 seed then it is evident that someone doesn't know what the heck they are doing!!!
