There wasn't much that could stop these boys on June 20.

Competing in a steady downpour at the White Tail Shooting Preserve and Sporting Clays course near Bloomsburg, four 12-year-old boys who made up the Factoryville Sportsman Club youth team combined to finish second in a statewide sporting clay shooting competition.

Despite this being the first time the FSC fielded a team, the boys completed the 100 clay bird event against more than 110 other shooters, with a more-than-respectable showing.

Team members are Jimmy Lyons, Kyle Hegedty, George Schwartz and Jericho Hendershot. The boys all received medals for their finish, along with a buffet lunch. Coaches for the team were Josh Hess, Phil McCarthy, John Hegedty, George Hegedty, Ron Gorko, Al Vasky and George Kessler.

The club is already looking ahead to next year's competition, with practice scheduled to begin in April on the club grounds. Anyone interested in joining should contact the club at 378-2593.

Doe license applications

County treasurers will begin accepting antlerless deer license applications three weeks earlier this year, beginning on July 13 for resident hunters, and July 27 for non-resident hunters.

For the 2009-10 license year, antlerless deer license fees are the same as they have been since 1999, according to PGC executive director Carl. G. Roe.

By state law, the licenses can only be sold only by county treasurers, so hunters will need to prepare and mail separate applications for antlerless deer licenses. County treasurer addresses can be found on page 48 of the 2009-10 Pennsylvania Hunting & Trapping Digest, which is provided free to each license buyer.

According to Roe, hunters must use the new pink envelopes, which are provided to each license buyer by the issuing agents, and not the previously used yellow envelopes. Anyone who orders through the Game Commission's Web site (www.pgc.state.pa.us), a new Digest and two pink envelopes will be included in the package, along with the licenses.
