Bring on paving

Congested stretches of Mulberry Street, Pittson Avenue and other local roads can be difficult to navigate even under the best conditions. So the prospects of a $3 million paving project, funded with federal stimulus money, promises some major-league congestion and aggravation.

But, bring it on.

One of the few bright spots of the long recession is that it has focused some much-needed attention on a wide array of neglected public infrastructure.

PennDOT, in announcing the impending paving projects, noted that the objective is not simply to repair damaged stretches of the streets, but to establish regular paving cycles to keep the roads in good condition.

Paving is likely to begin this summer on a number of the state routes that pass through the city and conclude by mid-fall. The temporary inconvenience will be substantial, but so will the long-term improvement.
