Unwelcome in South Side, Latino parade headed back downtown

When Scranton's growing Latino community marches next month in its fourth annual heritage parade, it won't be in South Side.

The Aug. 16 event has been planned to return downtown, where organizers and city officials said it's a better fit. The celebration on Pittston Avenue last year drew the ire of residents who said it was too disruptive and too rowdy for a neighborhood setting.

Complaints included drunken loitering and cars spinning their wheels and roaring up the street.

Among the critics was Councilwoman Judy Gatelli, who said she wouldn't allow the parade in South Side again. Mayor Chris Doherty delivered a similar message.

For a time, organizer Pedro Gonzalez insisted the event remain in South Side, where there is a significant Latino population. But Mr. Gonzalez now says moving the parade from downtown, where it originated, was "a mistake."

"The community deserves better than that," he said.

William Torres, another organizer, said the furor took on a life of its own.

"It was overblown, but what can you do?" he said. "You face it, discuss it and then you move on."

It didn't take any prodding to decide the parade should be relocated, Mr. Gonzalez said. Wayne Evans, president of the South Side Residents Association, called it a "foregone conclusion."

"The bottom line is any parade like that is more appropriate downtown," he said.

Mr. Gonzalez said in recent years the Latino community often hasn't felt as welcome downtown, but it's time that changed. Keeping to a small section of a neighborhood only stifles the community's progress and integration, he said.

A festival Aug. 15 at Nay Aug Park will precede the parade. Having the parade downtown recognizes the citywide Latino community has grown beyond just South Side, Mr. Gonzalez said.

Mr. Gonzalez and Mr. Torres, both of Puerto Rican heritage, said they look forward to the celebration as a way to bring together the city's diverse Latino community, which now includes more than 20 nationalities.

"What I love about Latin Pride Weekend is exactly that," Mr. Gonzalez said.

"Why not parade in your own country? If you are SO proud, why don't you return?"

And I bet you say this every March 17th, too!

Why not parade in your own country? If you are SO proud, why don't you return? Its the same thing when the latinos hang their flags. Your in America, the only flag that should be flown here is OURS. Especially when you don't give anything back to this country. Half of you are an public assistance. It is what it is, facts do not lie.

Ethnicity should be celebrated. Just ask the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. Just ask the "La Festa Italiana" Committee. However, their celebrations are done downtown. In full view of the city. With all members of the greater community watching. The pillars of the Latino community should look to this as an opportunity for them to join the ranks of the previous immigrant groups in parading the BEST their people have to offer. Yes, there are a few hooligans who try to spoil the celebration and give their community a bad name. Shame on them. Their fellow latinos should discourage their behavior. If they're not, shame on them too.

It has been my experience that most of the Latin community are hard working individuals with a strong family core and faith. You can't say the same for some of the other "communities" that are increasing in population in Scranton. Lots of hanging around on street corners and in front of the Steamtown Mall (not to mention on the news every night for some type of arrest).

also just contact ICE, and let them know a large amount of illegals
just be be at this so called parade.
chimi 07/06/09 08:15
We now live next door to a house full of them & they don't go by our laws so why should we fall all over them & give them what they want. No parking signs mean NOTHING to them, blocking alley ways mean NOTHING. I say you want to be accepted & WANTED then go by our laws or get the hell out of here.

I'm sorry that some of you would rather not hear the truth about your beloved Scranton, a city that I admired growing up until I finally woke up one day and had the epiphany that progressive thinking or "breaking the mold" was unwelcome in the Electric City. I stand by my comments, despite them venturing outside your realm of comfort. I can GUARANTEE that many of you gay- and/or Latino-bashers are the very same ones who drink and drive on Friday nights, use profane language in public, smoke in public places, let your dogs bark at night, or do a variety of other things that many like myself consider to be irritating and annoying. The difference? Those sorts of things have become widely-accepted by society in NEPA for some odd reason whereas having brown skin or holding hands with a member of the same sex still aren't. The faster Scranton catches up to the rest of the nation the better. Your wages are FAR below the national average and are remaining relatively flat while the upcoming influx of NYC/NJ transplants is projected to cause housing prices to SOAR. Want better career opportunities to come to NEPA? You'd better "wake up!" I plan to open my own business enterprise in the future, and I would NEVER bring family-sustaining jobs to an area that exudes such a terrible image.
SWB 07/06/09 05:43
I think the Latino heritage parade would be a great thing..........to have in Puerto Rico!! If you want to live here, do as we do here!
Jay 07/06/09 05:09
Here's some more advice for SWB. You left the area - excellent - good - we don't want you here. BUT if you could also stop commenting on the Scranton Times site too that would be fantastic. Then we will not have to listen/deal with you at all.
Whiskey Jack 07/06/09 03:18
SWB- News flash for you.. this area is 66% Democratic... remember? the same enlightened folks that voted for Obama.
