Pike drowning victim identified

DINGMANS FERRY - A man who drowned Friday while swimming in a Pike County creek has been identified as Venatesh Sankar, 27, of Jersey City, N.J.

County coroner Kevin Stroyan said Mr. Sankar had been trying to help a friend who was struggling in the waters of Adams Creek, about two miles off Route 209.

Mr. Stroyan said he doesn't know how long Mr. Sankar was submerged for, but he suspects the group of nine men he was with underestimated the creek's depth.

Emergency responders were called just before 2 p.m. Divers recovered Mr. Sankar's body.
