Meeting turns to celebration

A medical staff meeting turned into a celebratory event recognizing Dr. John F. McGeehan's 22 years of service as Mercy Hospital's director of medical education.

Physician colleagues as well as members of the Mercy staff were on hand as medical staff president Dr. Peter Cognetti surprised Dr. McGeehan with a plaque to commemorate their appreciation of his achievements.

It read, in part: "... We mark this day as our time to pause and express our deepest gratitude. Well Done, John F. McGeehan, M.D. - physician, educator and colleague - director of medical education for Mercy Hospital 1987 - 2009."

Dr. Shubhra M. Shetty will succeed Dr. McGeehan as director of medical education at the hospital.

Medical staff on hand to honor Dr. McGeehan included Drs. Charles J. Bannon, John H. Doherty, E. Donald Kotchick, J. Michael Tedesco, Theodore J. Tomaszewski, Peter Cognetti, Paul F. Remick, Linda J. Thomas, Michael R. Klingerman and Jeremiah W. Eagen.

Joining the celebration were Cathie McGeehan, Gail Moeller, Kathleen Ross, Francine Kozlowski, Diane Coolbaugh and Sister Elizabeth Anne Brandreth, R.S.M.

Super students

Allyson Marianelli of Old Forge has been accepted into the Lycoming (College) Scholars Program, which is designed to meet the needs of students with superior intellectual ability. Scholars are admitted to the program based on high school achievement. Scholars must complete higher-level distribution courses, as well as an independent project during their junior or senior year. ... Bucknell University senior Randy Gowat of Peckville is one of 24 students from North America to be selected as an Australian Education International North America ambassador for the 2009-10 academic year. A civil and environmental engineering major, Randy is the son of Mary and Gregory Gowat. A member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, he has served as a new student ambassador. He studied in Australia at the University of New South Wales in the spring of 2009.

High notes

The Rev. David Brague will be honored on his fifth anniversary as pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church in Pittston during a covered-dish supper today in the fellowship hall. This event, coordinated by the session, board of deacons and the original pulpit nominating committee, also will fete Pastor Brague's wife, Michele, and their children, Nathanael and Lauren.
