Council incumbents have a tough night in Dunmore

Of the three Dunmore Borough Council incumbent candidates vying for a Democratic nomination, only one came out on top, according to unofficial county results from Tuesday's primary election with all precincts reporting.
Timothy Burke captured one of three open bids and will be on the ballot in November, beating out fellow incumbents Melanie Naro - the current council president - and Gerry Hart.
Mr. Burke garnered the most votes, followed by newcomers Gene Ruddy and Carol Scrimalli, respectively. If elected to another term, Mr. Burke promised to stick to borough contracts and be diligent with promotions and bids for work.
Along with candidate Frank O'Neill, Ms. Naro and Mr. Hart campaigned together on a platform that promised the tenacity to make tough financial decisions. The election follows a tumultuous six months in the borough, starting with the council majority's decision in December to raise property taxes by 36 percent.
Both Ms. Naro and Mr. Hart voted for the increase, which was earmarked for debt service. Mr. Burke cast one of the three dissenting votes. He also voted against the hiring of new Police Chief Patrick Reese, who planned a council run before his appointment.
The Police Department filed four grievances in one month, and the 235 acres of Dunmore-owned land in Dickson City, once earmarked for a potential golf course, remains undeveloped. Dunmore borough officials have a May 29 court date to request permission to borrow more than $1.3 million for the underfunded 2008 budget.
Though he lost a Democratic bid for council, it appears Joseph Talutto has the tax collector race all but locked up. He ran unopposed but could face competition from Louis Paciotti, who waged a write-in campaign, the results of which were unavailable Tuesday night.
