Maryland man sentenced after riding bike 180 miles here for teen sex

A man who rode his bicycle 180 miles to have sex with a Scranton teen he met on the Internet will serve one to four years in prison, a judge ruled Wednesday.

William Wagner, 26, 414 Battery Drive, Havre de Grace, Md., met the 15-year-old girl through the social networking Web site MySpace. In June, he biked to Scranton to meet the teen.

In February, Mr. Wagner pleaded guilty to unlawful contact with a minor.

He slept at Pine Brook baseball field, Sanderson Avenue and Green Place, while he was in Scranton. He took the teen to the baseball field and had intercourse with her there several times, police said.

After he left Scranton, the girl told her parents she had sex with Mr. Wagner, who reported it to police.

The Times-Tribune does not identify sexual assault victims.

The teen told police she considered herself to be "in a relationship" with Mr. Wagner at one time. He knew she was only 15, she told police.

"It was a peculiar set of circumstances, including that he rode his bike to meet her," said Deputy District Attorney Michelle Olshefski. "I think the sentence is very fitting. He acknowledged that he knew her age and what he did was wrong."

After serving his prison sentence, Mr. Wagner will have to register as a sex offender under the state's Megan's Law requirements for 10 years.

I think we have gone a bit overboard on the legalistic protection of our children. 50 years ago, that scenario could have described my parents, except they dated in church and openly. No one blinked an eye. And yet teens are maturing sexually earlier now than then. Having a son just out of his teens and remembering my friends' behaviour and my own during our teenage years. It's a bit ridiculous to say that these teenagers are innocent victims and the older people dangerous predators. I have heard of more than one parent of a teenage girl having to put bars on their house windows, not to keep people out, but to prevent the girls going out to bars and having sex. Most industrialized nations have the age of consent at 14 or 15. And really, in 3 years time when she is 18, will she have really matured that much?
Instead we should empower our teens to make good decisions and follow our own moral convictions. The problem is that most parents find that too much work. It's much easier to say, Kids today are different, as they let their child scream and run around a restaurant, or talk in the movie theatre, or show a lack of respect for themselves and others.
Recently in a church I attend, a divorced man in his 30s became interested in a 17 year old. The members of the church were scandalized and the man left. Thinking of my parents, grandparents, and scores of other normal, positive couples I have seen with a big difference in age, most often married when one partner was a teenager, I wonder if a hardworking, church-going man 16 years older is such a horrible thing for a daughter.

if it was my 15 yr old daughter, he would be happy to have the police arrest him. As a matter of fact, so would she. But the way the laws are today, I would be the one in jail.

The new version of this web site diminishes the worth of the Scranton Times. The organization of the prior site was much better and as one of those who posted said, "I hate this new online version; it is NOT user friendly!!" I agree with his/her conclusion.

I agree with Buck. This is OLD news. This online version of the paper is so boring. Where are all the old things we used to be able to find, like regional briefs, this morning, and sentencings in Lackawanna County? I hate this new online version; it is NOT user friendly!!

The city to shore MS bike ride is 180 miles. I wish he had considered this instead of the whole doing the deeds of the devil idea he had going on.

How many weeks is this going to be on the web site??? It's a little stale don't you think?

After he left Scranton, the girl told her parents she had sex with Mr. Wagner, who reported it to police.
Who reported it to police, Mr. Wagner or the parents?

She knew what she was doing.
She lured him to where she was.
She told him were to come to.
She told him where to meet her.
He didn't know the area.
She did.
She knew everything
and did everything.

Now his life is ruined while she goes on to ruin the lives of other men. She is no victim. She is a manipulator.

I would think that after a 180 mile bike ride, one's libido, not to mention physical wear and tear on the groin area, would would be squashed?

Kids are still going to find away to use the internet. It is a great source of knowledge and learning and has surpassed the use of written text for its ease of use and it should not be taken away. Instead, its use should be monitored by the parents.

She lures him to her then she snitches as soon as he leaves town. What he did was wrong and he knew it. Commenter was right that if she committed a felony, she would be charged as an adult. I hope that guy gets out in minimum time. Parents should monitor their childs internet activity. 180 mile ride made it news worthy.

note: there is no poor grammar in paragraph five it says "the girl told her parents she had sex with Mr. Wagner, who reported it to police" if you read it right it was her parents who reported it

Think he burned off a few pounds in the process? What a weight loss incentive is that? Think his clothes still fit when he got home?
