Fifteen families in Susquehanna County filed a federal lawsuit against Cabot Oil and Gas Corp. on Thursday, saying the Texas-based natural gas operator damaged their property and health while drilling for gas in the Marcellus Shale.
The families, who live in an area around Carter Road in Dimock Twp. and have gas leases with Cabot, say contamination and pollution caused by Cabot's activities has made some of them physically sick, fouled their drinking water and diminished their property values.

A federal judge has ruled that former judges Michael T. Conahan and Mark A. Ciavarella Jr. are immune from damages in civil suits stemming from the kids-for-cash scandal for actions they took in court, but not for their out-of-court actions.
U.S. District Judge A. Richard Caputo also denied a motion by Luzerne County to dismiss it as a defendant in the suits filed by hundreds of juveniles sentenced by Ciavarella.

Two businesses in different parts of the city were robbed early Friday, and city police were investigating whether the holdups are related.
In each of the robberies - first at the Sunoco A Plus Mini Market in West Scranton and about four hours later at the CVS Pharmacy in South Side - the suspect brought merchandise to the checkout before demanding money, police said.
"The (modus operandi) seems similar - bringing things to the counter," police Capt. Carl Graziano said. "That's not a usual occurrence with a robbery."

A U.S. Navy officer from Nanticoke died Thursday in Kuwait as a result of a vehicle accident, the military and family members have confirmed.
The serviceman was identified as U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Brian M. Patton, 37.
Patton's body is expected to return to Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Del. on Friday evening and a dignified transfer service will be follow, according to a news advisory from the Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operation Center.

DICKSON CITY - The winners of the Archbald and Throop mayor and Taylor council races stayed the same after manual recounts were completed Thursday.
Incumbent Archbald Mayor Ed Fairbrother won with 1,289 votes to 1,093 for David Moran, a write-in challenger.
In Taylor, the winners of four council seats were James Digwood, 1,163; Gene King, 876; Edward W. Derenick, 804; and John J. Tigue, 781. The other candidates and their vote totals were Councilman George Aulisio, 767, and Michael Kamierczak, 739.

Both sides are claiming victories after a judge's ruling on arbitration awards granted to Scranton's police and fire unions in the past year.
For the unions, the decision by visiting Monroe County Judge Peter O'Brien brings their members another step closer to securing hard-fought pay increases.
The arbitration had called for wage increases every six months from Jan. 1, 2008, through Jan. 1, 2014. While Judge O'Brien ruled raises should be given only once a year over that period, he upheld an initial increase of 8 percent retroactive to Jan. 1, 2008, followed by a 3 percent increase retroactive to Jan. 1, 2009.
