Talerico carries Riverside over West Scranton

Corey Talerico usually wears No. 12, but when the Riverside senior quarterback had his jersey ripped early in the first quarter Friday night, he was forced to wear No. 9 the rest of the game.

He probably should have painted an 'S' on his chest.

Talerico did everything but leap tall buildings for the Vikings. He accounted for 237 yards of offense and five touchdowns in a 32-19 season-opening win over West Scranton at Scranton Memorial Stadium.

On the ground, Talerico ran for 167 yards and three touchdowns. Through the air, he completed 10 of 14 passes for 70 yards and two scores.

To cap off his performance, he made an interception in the end zone late in the fourth quarter when West was trying to mount a rally.

"Corey all-around had a very good game," Riverside coach Harry Armstrong said. "The best part about him tonight was he was able to keep his poise. He hit a couple of bumps in the road along the way, but he shook them off and his teammates helped him with that."

Indeed, Talerico refused to take all the credit for the win.

"It wasn't all me," he said. "Our line did a great job blocking. On the edge, our receivers did a great job. Our defense did an even better job in the secondary, containing (West quarterback Tyler) Hughes, stopping the pass and filling in on the run.

"We've been working on our game plan for the past two weeks. It feels good to perfect it and come out with a W."

With each team possessing explosive offenses, a high-scoring game was anticipated. Riverside held up its end of the bargain, but West Scranton never quite seemed to find its rhythm.

Hughes ran for 126 yards and all three of the Invaders' touchdowns. But the Vikings defense intercepted him four times.

"This year, we're really trying to focus on running the ball," West coach Joe Gerek said. "But when you run the ball and don't get first downs, it's tough."

Riverside cashed in its first two possessions to jump out to a quick 12-0 lead.

After scoring on a 12-yard run with 8:52 left in the first quarter, Talerico ripped off a 75-yard run the next time the Vikings had the ball.

Two West defenders had Talerico trapped in the backfield for a loss, but he slipped the tackles and raced to the end zone.

"They filled it nice," Talerico said. "But I just spun off the linebacker and had green in front of me. I hit the hole as hard as I could and went up the sideline."

Added Gerek: "We were in position a lot of times to make the tackle and he made us miss. He made some really outstanding plays offensively and defensively."

Momentum seemed to swing when Ray Dominguez intercepted Talerico at the West 45. Three plays later, Hughes scored on a 4-yard run to bring the Invaders within 12-7 with 32.6 seconds left in the first.

But Riverside scored 20 points over the next 9½ minutes to seize control.

Talerico found Skylar Lavage for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 6:49 left in the second quarter. He then hooked up with Nick Rossi for a 24-yard touchdown with 2:48 left before halftime to give the Vikings a 26-7 lead. His 7-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the third quarter extended the margin to 32-7.

West did make things interesting.

Touchdown runs of 8 and 42 yards by Hughes brought the Invaders to within 32-19 early in the fourth quarter.

Then, they drove to the Riverside 10 and had first-and-goal when Rossi picked off Hughes in the end zone to halt the threat with 4:27 left.

A pretty one-handed interception by Kyle Walsh with 3:30 remaining sealed the victory for the Vikings.
