Unwelcome in South Side, Latino parade headed back downtown

When Scranton's growing Latino community marches next month in its fourth annual heritage parade, it won't be in South Side.

The Aug. 16 event has been planned to return downtown, where organizers and city officials said it's a better fit. The celebration on Pittston Avenue last year drew the ire of residents who said it was too disruptive and too rowdy for a neighborhood setting.

Complaints included drunken loitering and cars spinning their wheels and roaring up the street.

Among the critics was Councilwoman Judy Gatelli, who said she wouldn't allow the parade in South Side again. Mayor Chris Doherty delivered a similar message.

For a time, organizer Pedro Gonzalez insisted the event remain in South Side, where there is a significant Latino population. But Mr. Gonzalez now says moving the parade from downtown, where it originated, was "a mistake."

"The community deserves better than that," he said.

William Torres, another organizer, said the furor took on a life of its own.

"It was overblown, but what can you do?" he said. "You face it, discuss it and then you move on."

It didn't take any prodding to decide the parade should be relocated, Mr. Gonzalez said. Wayne Evans, president of the South Side Residents Association, called it a "foregone conclusion."

"The bottom line is any parade like that is more appropriate downtown," he said.

Mr. Gonzalez said in recent years the Latino community often hasn't felt as welcome downtown, but it's time that changed. Keeping to a small section of a neighborhood only stifles the community's progress and integration, he said.

A festival Aug. 15 at Nay Aug Park will precede the parade. Having the parade downtown recognizes the citywide Latino community has grown beyond just South Side, Mr. Gonzalez said.

Mr. Gonzalez and Mr. Torres, both of Puerto Rican heritage, said they look forward to the celebration as a way to bring together the city's diverse Latino community, which now includes more than 20 nationalities.

"What I love about Latin Pride Weekend is exactly that," Mr. Gonzalez said.

Yes, SWB, we get it, Northern Virginia is utopia and we are a bunch of backwards, inbred, alcoholic chain-smoking, uneducated hillbillies here in NEPA.

You can keep your hoity-toity elitist attitudes down there. You're no better than anyone else.

I lived in Scranton from 1961 to 1965 while studying at the U of S where I graduated. Having been born in Puerto Rico of Spanish and Lebannese extraction made a good combination to lead a happy life in the anthracite city. There was nowhere to speak spanish in the whole area and to eat typical food I had to travel to NYC.

I am surprised at the great amount of latinos in the area nowadays.

since my interest was to learn english well I will not repeat a staying there.

Why is the times censoring comments worse than ever now?? i opine that the hispanics should be removed from south side and it's apparently not politically correct enough for this loser's article. Lame. And I thought liberals were open-minded to opposing points of view.......however "ignorant" they may be.....

All Parades should be held downtown. That is where they belong. In the Center of the Community. That includes Veterns,St Pats,Gay Pride,Latin, Italian or anyother kind of group. Please, stop the finger pointing. We need to come together as a Community and start looking after each other as well as getting to know each other. If your upset about crime, noise drugs and people who are causing trouble, form a Watch Group, get to know your neighbors and memebers of other neighborhoods. Do somthing positive.Help the community you live in become a better place to live.

Reading many of the comments down here is perfect evidence as to why so many of we educated, entrepreneurial, and intellectual youths FLEE Scranton as soon as possible to help improve OTHER areas. As a homosexual I'm aghast that some have had the nerve to inject our quest for civil equality into this unrelated fray, but then again when was the last time the Times (or any local media outlet for that matter) bothered to do a story showcasing the local LGBT community in a positive light instead of merely feeding the negative one that is so often cast down upon us by many Republican fear-mongerers on Faux News? I suppose something along those lines would require REAL journalism, and that wouldn't fly in an area where everyone flocks to dive bars, NASCAR races, or high school football games for "high culture," would it? Heaven forbid I expect to be afforded the same privileges as any heterosexual, right? I can be drafted, yet I can't openly serve our nation. I pay taxes, and yet my partner can't be covered under my health insurance plan. I can't donate blood, as it is "assumed" I "must" be HIV positive. I wouldn't even be guaranteed the right to visit my better half in the hospital should something catastrophic occur. If that's "irking" you folks in NEPA, then you better ready the torches and pitchforks because minorities in Scranton have had enough of being smacked around, and we're starting to rebel against the social ignorance that has kept our region economically depressed and destitute for decades!

to J Perez- Evidently you did not read the comments in Mar. Many of us complained about the drunkfest. YES, even the Irish did. And I do every year. I do not take my children anymore because of the drunks.

I am not against a Hispanic parade, but if what was done in southside last year is what it is going to be, then NO, I don't want it. I would love to see dancers doing the salsa, meringue, mambo down the street. I would love to hear a maricachi band or an afro-latino drum ensemble. I would enjoy seeing floats and members of the Latino community that are proud examples of that community.

I DO NOT want to see a bunch if idiots burning out in beat up cars blasting reggaetone music out of car stereos.

As a Cuban American, I was totally embarrassed by the awful display last year that claimed to be a Hispanic Parade. It was nothing but a car caravan of screeching their tires, waving Puerto Rican and Mexican flags, but not one American one. It was a disgrace. If you are showing this as a shining example Latino Pride and Heritage, it is no wonder others view us so poorly. I live in South Side and am glad it will not be here, in front of my face to be ashamed of again.

I'd prefer to be rid of all parades. They're an outmoded tradition of groups that felt some kind of need to show the world how "special" they are. Boring, expensive, drawing trouble makers, requiring costly clean-up and police hours...are parades really worth it?

What is a heritage parade? I live in the southwest and have never heard of such a thing and the Latino population is much higher here. Cinco de Mayo on May 5th is considered the Latino holiday.

Racism and Ignorance in 2009?! COME ON people! I'm glad it's been held in downtown. It's a better spot for a parade.

I went to the Latin Pride parade in downtown a couple of years ago. I was not welcomed at all. The food they were selling had labels in spanish & when I asked what was in a dish, I was answered in spanish. Seemed to me they didn't want outsiders there.
Tom 07/06/09 12:26
I wish we could get rid of the St Patrick's Day drunkfest too. Its a boil on the behind of this town and an insult to Irish heritage. I'm sick of the stereotype of the "Irish drunk."
Scott 07/06/09 12:05
Hey Melissa, I wouldn't want any parade that is about "loving openly" or that centers around any kind of sexuality, whether that be gay or straight. It just happens to be that straight people don't have the urge to parage through the streets wearing nothing much besides a feather boa and committing lewd acts in broad daylight down the main street, which is why gar pride marches are not necessarily desirable.
Scott 07/06/09 12:04
Hahahahaha finally someone is telling it like it is!! Drunk, loud, obnoxious celebrating of one's RACE is racist!

At least its not a Gay Rights Parade!!!!!

Yeah, At least! It would be truly disgusting if law-abiding, tax-paying citizens took to the streets to demand their rights to love openly, wouldn't it? Gay people are just as good, or as bad, as straight people!

Melissa 07/06/09 11:09
KEEP THEM COMING, FROM EVERYTHING THAT I HAVE SEEN IN THE PAST DECADE HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT A GOOD CHANGE. HAHAHA YEAH RIGHT!
it all, over now 07/06/09 10:13
In addition to being downtown, Mr. Doherty should declare all parade days alcohol free family days. All establishments should be prohibited from serving alcohol until after the parade is over. Same rules should apply to St. Patricks Day parade. That way, all of the businesses that depend on shoppers can actually make some money from the parade goers instead of putting up with drunken fools who cannot speak even the most simplest sentences without tripping over themselves.
Bob 07/06/09 09:50
The parade needs to be officially sanctioned, much in the manner of the St. Patrick's Day Parade or the Festa Italiana. It needs to be organized by competent indiduals so that it will receive the support of our community.
