Judge to decide whether West Scranton teen should stay in jail

A Lackawanna County judge may decide today whether a recent West Scranton High School graduate will stay in prison for violating his bail on a drunken driving charge.

Chase Passeri, 18, was charged with drunken driving after a Dec. 6 wreck in Newton Twp. that nearly severed his arm and injured his four passengers, including a 14-year-old girl.

His bail was revoked after he was cited again in early June for underage drinking. Scranton police allegedly found him and several other teens parked in a cemetery with several 12-packs of beer, prosecutors said.

Mr. Passeri's attorney, Jason Mattioli, has asked Judge Michael Barrasse to release the teen from prison so he can seek treatment. On Tuesday, he presented more information about Mr. Passeri's plan for treatment if he were to be released.

Efforts to reach Mr. Mattioli were unsuccessful Tuesday.

Deputy District Attorney Maryann Grippo gave Judge Barrasse dozens of pages of transcribed phone conversations Mr. Passeri has had since he was jailed on the bail violation, which she believes show Mr. Passeri's failure to take responsibility for his actions.

"He feels like a victim, that there's a plot against him," Ms. Grippo said. "My concern is that he is still not making the connection between his actions and the consequences."

In one of those conversations, Mr. Passeri's mother told him he was the "Britney Spears of Lackawanna County," persecuted by prosecutors because he is a celebrity, Ms. Grippo said.

She said later statements like those make her believe Mr. Passeri's family is also not taking his addictions seriously.

"If his family won't acknowledge he has a problem, how can they support his sobriety?" she asked.

Judge Barrasse will review the information presented at Tuesday's hearing before deciding whether to release Mr. Passeri from prison.

Chase Passeri is a celebrity? Can someone who is close friends or a family member explain to the rest of us what makes him a celebrity. I don't remember his name on the list of high school football all stars, receiving a division 1 scholarship, or being an academic all star. What exactly makes him a celebrity that he feels his popularity makes him a target for prosecution? Aren't people who commit crimes supposed to be held accountable?

Just one question for the mom of this teen??? What is it exactly that makes him a celebrity in the town of West Scranton ???? If she thinks that almost killing 4 people in his car while drunk driving makes him a celebrity than maybe she is the one who also needs treatment. Maybe this reporter should interview her to get the whole story on what it is exactly she sees that allows her to compare him to Brittany Spears. This mom needs to get over herself and step up to some tough love!!!!!

To family friend:
I agree about not faulting a parents love for their child. So now this family has to build on this strength. The family needs to dig deep into their souls and find out why this has all happened. This takes work and commitment on the parent and teen. Again, I believe a good therapist could help them with this. If this does not get taken care of now, the teen will not heal.

People can only base their opinions on what they hear in the media.Chase was not drinking the evening he was with his friends. What was said between Chase and his family was completely taken OUT OF TEXT.If you knew the whole conversation you would understand why these things were said.Words were mixed and twisted to make this conversation seem very different than what was actually said. His family is desperately trying to get him help but can't seem to get anywhere. His mother was just trying to comfort her son while he was in prison. He is her CHILD no matter what he did.Any mother in her situation would do the same. You can't fault parents for loving their son.

The parent needs to take a good long look in the mirror, and say to herself, "I messed up." You have given the message to your son that it is ok to drink and not take responsibility for his behavior. I think the teen has alot of underlying emotions about his life, and what has happened in his life, that needs to get resolved. Pushing this under the rug, being in denial, and placing blame on others is not what the teen needs. He needs a really good therapist!

im sick of hearing about this kid already. was this story really necessary?
get over it 07/01/09 10:16
The kid is being a teenager and teenagers party. This "treatment" is just a ploy to get him out of jail. Put him on house arrest the jails are ridiculous the way it is. You can't drink on house arrest problem solved.

MAYBE HE CAN HAVE BRITNEY SPEARS SING AT THE BENEFIT HIS FAMILY WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR HIS LEGAL DEFENSE. YOU KNOW THAT'S GONNA HAPPEN NEXT.

This boy needs treatment, long term treatment to keep him away from his family and let couselors show him how HIS actions have affected so many people. He needs to learn humility and to be sorry for his actions, but I don't know if jail is the place for that. This is now in the hands of the judge and I pray he does what's best for all.

The mom is part of the reason he is in trouble. I bet this kid never was held accountable for his action. Well sonny, you are a big boy now, in a big people world, and Bubba is going to teach you a big lesson Mr. Celebrity.

the first step to fixing a problem is admitting you have one. He hasn't hit that point yet. Neither has Mommie.
Tom 07/01/09 09:22
Mom apparently needs as much help as her kid does.
Susan 07/01/09 09:10
Good time to let him out 4th of JULY everyone will be drinking....
Passeri Pride 07/01/09 09:02
Wow does his mother really want him to be the Britney Spears of Lackawanna County. Because he is on his way there. Commiting the same offences time and again, Making himself look like a spoiled brat that can get away with anything because in his mind he is some kind of demi god. Well maybe he will be like her. Maybe when he doesn't learn his lesson and gets so messed up on drugs and alcohol they will be taking him out in a stretcher and commiting him. But I guess that would be better than one day being taken out in a body bag which will happen if this boy just walks away from the CRIMES he committed. He needs to be punished for the CRIMES he committed and he needs help with ALL his problems so this does not happen again so that he may be a productive member of his community as apposed to the person he may become if this continues. He will be another drunk or druggie siting in jail our tax dollars are paying for.
Now let the defending of this law breaking young man begin because it is going to. But again facts are facts people he did the crimes he must pay the price and do the time.

Since when is this punk a celebrity? There's a big world out there beyond West Scranton and high school athletics.
Chas 07/01/09 07:27
Who is this kid? Why does mom think he's a celebrity? Sounds like mom has an inflated opinion of her criminal child.

Britney Spears!!!! Oh my God that is a classic!!! Talk about a total disconnect from reality! What has this kid done to become a celebrity other than get drunk and almost kill a bunch of people?

Mommy has a special snowflake and all the baddies are picking on him!? No wonder the kid is messed up! Talk about delusions of grandjure!

It is obvious this man and his family are in denial. As long as the denial is there his disease wins.He is no victim. This is the consequence of your decisions. I hope his mom can realize she needs help too. Brittney Spears had an adiiction issue also but got help. To the Passeri's...get help. His addiction has 3 outcomes...death,jail or recovery.

He may as well stay there, he will mostly likely going back there after the trial...It will count as time served...
paul 07/01/09 06:05
Leave him in jail. If he stays there long enough he will dry out...Isn't that what all "The celebrities" do?
