Diocese of Scranton adds collection to boost priests' benefits

The Diocese of Scranton announced this weekend the start of a new monthly collection to help pay for the retirement, education and health care costs of priests.

In flyers tucked into parish bulletins on Father's Day, the diocese outlined the widening gap between the rising costs of clergy care and education and the insufficient funds available to pay for those programs.

Bishop Joseph F. Martino said a second collection to be held at Masses on the first weekend of every month will be used to cover what he called the "enormous" costs of training and care, which are currently not fully met by ordinary diocesan revenues.

In the 2008-2009 fiscal year, the diocese is $1.8 million short of the $8.6 million needed to pay for clergy care and education, according to diocesan figures. Parish assessments and funds raised through the diocesan annual appeal contributed $6.8 million for those programs.

Bishop Martino said the new monthly collection "seems to be the most effective and understandable way to meet our obligations to the clergy" rather than increasing the assessments paid by parishes throughout the diocese.

According to diocesan figures for the 2008-09 fiscal year:

- The diocese had to pay $1.1 million for "clergy support and medical assistance" above the $2.9 million parishes contributed to cover health insurance premiums for active priests. Diocese spokesman William Genello said he could not specify what accounted for those costs because they pertain to "medical or other personal issues," but he said "the diocese is obligated to provide necessary care for priests who might be dealing with a variety of personal issues." He also said the costs have exceeded the amount budgeted for them.

- Costs to run the Villa St. Joseph retirement home for priests exceeded the funds parishes contributed to operate it by $38,000.

- Health care costs for retired priests were more than double the $696,000 parishes contributed for those expenses.

- Seminary and clergy education cost $263,000, but the diocese projects education expenses "will increase significantly" in the next fiscal year. Mr. Genello said a number of priests will be engaged in advanced studies this year, in part because priests must be trained in specific areas, like Canon Law, as older priests with those specialities retire.

Why are you referring to President Obama as "Hussein Obama," Dave?
Person who knows how to read 06/25/09 11:20
Father Dave Bechtel, shame on you. The Hussein Obama stuff is Rush Limbaugh talk that doesn't show the respect that the President deserves. I'm sure he wouldn't call you Dave in public.
You would call me a so called Catholic 06/25/09 11:02
Stephen,

Very reasonable. Hope the blog is well.

Jeff,

Yawn, Zzzzzzzzzzz. The IRS can look into us all they want.

1) They will find that we have complied with the law. At no time have I ever stated in a homily or otherwise that people should vote for one candidate over the other, etc. I simply preached that the Church is pro-life, pro-life is the most important issue, etc. From that the people must draw their own conclusions. Only they will be in the voting booth. We do not actively campagin for one party over the other. In fact the bishop has made that clear to his priests.

I find it ironic that all becasue we preach against abortion, you accuse us of being the front for the GOP. You seem to ignore the rather liberal stance the Catholic Church has taken on other issues such as Immigration and Social Justice. When priests get going on those issues you would think they were all Liberal Democrats. Ironically no one accuses them of being a front for the Democratic Party. Should the IRS look into that too, or only when we preach against abortion?

2) The Catholic Church is going to preach the Word of God regardless of persecution or outside interference. If anything is learned by history, it should be that.

This "Hussein Obama" stuff betrays what I have suspected all along - that there is a group of hardcore right-wing conservatives that has infiltrated the Catholic Church and is using the church as cover to work what is not God's mission, but which instead is the mission of the GOP. Bishop Martino's repeated attacks on Senator Casey and President Obama are a prime example of this.

I believe the FBI and IRS needs to look at this closely, as there are strict prohibitions relating to the church and its tax status.

Ignored Parent:

Here is the reality: If you want to come and talk to me about whatever is on your mind, I would be happy to listen. I am far more kinder then people think. There is a time to exort people and challange them, and there is a time to listen kindly without passing judgment. In speaking to a group of people I challange. In speaking one on one with people I listen and do not pass judgment. Homily time is the time to exort, challange, etc. (Sometimes. of course there are times to encourage and motivate as well.) Confession, and one on one meetings is the time to listen and not pass judgment- at least in my opinion.

Proud Catholic:

I was ordained in June of 2008. I did enter seminary right after high school, but I left for a while and spent some time in the secular world. I came back after a few years. So the idea that I have not "lived life" and am sheltered, which is what I think you and others are trying to imply is simply false. In fact many vocations are now comming in after having spent time working in the secular world.

As for being inexperienced, indeed I plead guilty as charged. However no matter how much experience I get, I will not be held captive to cotton candy theology.

The reality is this sir, it is not the Church that is out of step with the world, but the WORLD that is out of step with the CHURCH.

Father Dave Bechtel 06/25/09 07:44
Proud Catholic,

I tend to see the 1960's generation as wanting a lot of theological sugar, but no theological vegetables and fruits. Sir, I am sorry, but I will not be held captive to this notion of cotton candy theology. I do not preach cotton candy theology, I preach God's Word.

"Hussein Obama"
I'm assuming the reference by Father Bechtel to "Hussein Obama" was a paraphrase from the Vatican newspaper in question, as I'd be disappointed if he (Father Bechtel) were to engage in what I think is a none-too-respectful way of referring to the President of the United States. I note this because while I've written some highly critical things about Bishop Martino and disagreed with Father Bechtel's defense of this actions, I (a lowly lay quasi-Catholic) would & have never referred to Father Bechtel as anything other than his professional title..."Father Bechtel"; the same is true for Bishop Martino (although I will refer to him as "Joseph Martino" on rare occasion if I want to contrast his religious vs his his secular actions).

To the issue at hand: All I can say is "yawn". Raising this extra money has nothing to do with anything other than the economics of running a large organization in this day and age, period. Anyone who stridently believes that this has something to do with some massive scandal can save the mental energy and instead simply chose to not contribute. For every non-compassionate, ineffective priest I've met one who is just the opposite who deserves this kind of support.

Stephen Albert 06/25/09 07:28
The church is not about the Bishop. The Bishop does not represent Jesus, he is an institutional bureaucrat.

The church is about the Word of God and how the Word is put to Deed in the community, BY the community.

The Bishop, and Father Bechtel alike, have perhaps forgotten what it's all about. In his latest posts, Father Bechtel now seems to just be the frustrated footsoldier, blindly carrying out the General's orders. He talks about destruction. Life and death for us as individuals is a natural part of God's cycle of life, but the death of the COMMUNITY is not at all part of that plan - yet Father Bechtel and Bishop Martino seem to be driven to rush headlong into that very destruction of the community.

Think with your heart, Father Bechtel.

Wow, Dave, you are really showing your true colors here. What's next, are you going to rant about President Obama's birth certificate or something?
Bill Clark 06/25/09 12:36
Kind of reminds me of the priest in the latest clint eastwood movie. You can tell he has not been involved in a parrish setting very long, or he would have better grasp of what families have gone thru since martino has gotten here and what we continue to experience. book smart, not much common sense is what my grandmother used to say.

Slowly but surely, Dave Becthtel is revealing himself for what he is and that's a young kid with some fanciful notion of what the Church was before Vatican II. In my mind's eye, I can see him prancing through the neighborhood wearing a long cassock and a beretta (he probably found in some thrift store) reading his office and hoping that the Latin Mass returns. He probably comes from a family of Republicans and never spent a day as a laborer or a factory worker during his summers off from school. He thinks Opus Dei followers and their ilk are the future of the Church. Like most kids who never experienced "the good old days", Dave hasn't got a clue. His recents comments on our wonderful new president are further confirmation of his ignorance. The problem with the Church is that there are a lot more Dave Bechtels among the recent ranks of priests than the Berrigan brothers type. God help us all. Those who forget the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them.
Union Joe 06/24/09 07:51
You know, Father Dave, in the past I have seen you post comments angry when people addressed you simply as "Dave." Now, you hypocritically refer to President Obama as "Hussein Obama." use his title, or his proper name, if you wish people to extend that same courtesy to you.

Father, when were you ordained?

Union Joe, I am also a follower of Father Dan Berrigan. Luckily, the Jesuits and other such orders still have seminarians who will keep the church afloat.

Father Dave, I know priests who voted for Obama. Father Dave, I assume, as Union Joe says, that you are young and inexperienced. Maybe once you get some more experience under your belt you will wise up. Thank God for 1960s Catholicism, that which kept me in the church!

ALL ANTI-CATHOLIC CATHOLICS & NON-CATHOLICS, BISHOPS REPRESENT JESUS CHRIST, DID ANY OF YOUR PARENTS EVER TEACH YOU WHAT THE WORD RESPECT MEANS? AND I'M SURE YOU ALL ARE LEADING THE PERFECT LIFE AND WOULD NOT WANT ANYONE TO DISREPECT YOU, NO MATTER WHAT. I HOPE FOR ALL OF YOUR SAKE, JESUS CHRIST IS REALLY ALL MERCIFUL BECAUSE I WOULD NOT WANT TO BE IN ANY OF YOUR SHOES ON THE DAY I MEET GOD ALMIGHTY. P.S. FATHER DAVE WITH YOU ALL THE WAY

Proud Catholic:

We can only reach out to people who want to be reached out to. To be Catholic you first have to admit that you are a sinner, cannot save yourself, and that redemption comes soley from Christ.

In other words you first must realize you are fallen, then you must admit that you cannot get up under your own power. We can't offer a hand up if someone refuses to admit they need one. That is the nature of help: it can only be given to people who A) realize they need it and B) desire it.

Proud Catholic:

Another cryptic response which I am expected to magically uncode. Why did the Vatincan Newspaper release a statement praising Hussein Obama? What was the statement? Unless you are going to try to tell me the pope praised his pro-abortion stance I don't see why even Hussein can't be praised from time to time if he does something right. So I need more information.

Father Dave Bechtel 06/24/09 02:25
Dave? Notre Dame is still Catholic. You, in fact, have no say whatsoever in whether Notre Dame is Catholic, or whether ANYONE is Catholic. I know that upsets you, because your vision of the church is Barbara kneeling in prayer before you and Mr. Martino, but it's the truth. You are not the church. The people -- including those who are voting with their feet and their pocketbooks against Mr. Martino's reign of narcissism -- are the church.
