HARVEYS LAKE — State Rep. Karen Boback handily fought off a challenge by Democrat Russ Bigus to earn a second term in the 117th Legislative District, according to unofficial election returns.
With 27 of Luzerne County’s 29 precincts reporting, Ms. Boback led Mr. Bigus 12,971 to 5,608. Wyoming County returns showed Ms. Boback had 2,551 votes to Mr. Bigus’ 901, with all 30 precincts reporting. In Benton and Benton Twp. in Columbia County, Ms. Boback beat Mr. Bigus 633 to 217.
“It’s one of the most humbling experiences to see those numbers come in the way they did. I’m overwhelmed,” Ms. Boback said.
She arrived at the Lakeside Skillet restaurant at Harveys Lake just before 10 p.m., where she was greeted by cheers and applause from approximately 150 supporters.
Mr. Bigus showed up at the Harveys Lake American Legion around 8:45 p.m. to greet a small but loyal group of supporters. The tone was decidedly subdued.
“We did our best, but it’s still party politics in the 117th District,” Mr. Bigus said.
Mr. Bigus, a former Republican, changed his registration to run. He doesn’t plan to switch back just yet.
“I learned as a Democrat that I really agree with more of the Democratic ideals than I thought I did,” he said.
