Woman, 74, injured in city apartment fire

SCRANTON — A city woman was hospitalized Sunday after she was injured in a fire at the Jermyn Apartments.

City fire crews were called to the fifth floor of the apartment complex at 326 Spruce St. at about 8 a.m., Assistant Chief Paul Laskowski said.

The complex’s sprinkler system doused the flames, he said, but resident Alice Lumsden, 74, was burned in her apartment and was taken by ambulance to Community Medical Center. The Lackawanna County Communications Center reported she was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown.

Ass’t. Chief Laskowski said investigators were trying to determine the cause of the fire. There were no other injuries, he said.

Attic fire appears accidental, police say

OLYPHANT — A fire that broke out at a three-story home at 109 East Breaker St. on Saturday appears to have been accidental, state police in Dunmore said.

Police said residents Paul Jones and Jill Kidwell were not injured and that a neighbor discovered the fire, which broke out in the attic just before 5 p.m. Fire damage was contained to the attic, but the house sustained smoke and water damage, police said.

CPA firm’s expansion request is tabled

MOOSIC — The borough planning commission last week tabled action on a 1,200-square-foot addition to the Jones-Kohanski accounting office on Birney Avenue because of a pending lawsuit over access to a front parking lot.

The business already has the required parking spaces for the current and proposed square footage between lots in front of and behind the building.

But owner Mike Kohanski is in litigation with an adjacent property owner to obtain access to the front parking lot, making planning commission members hesitant to act on the plan.

The commission tabled the request until next month’s meeting so Mr. Kohanski could come up with alternative access for the front lot in the event the lawsuit is unsuccessful.

N.Y. man arrested on heroin charges

KINGSTON — Kingston police arrested a man from New York City on felony drug distribution charges Saturday night.

Johnny Hatcher, 39, will be charged with possession and delivery of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal use of a communications facility.

Police said they conducted several controlled purchases of heroin from Mr. Hatcher, also known as “Kev.” He delivered a total of 145 bags of heroin which, at a street value of $20 a bag, amounted to $2,900 worth of heroin, police said.

Mr. Hatcher was arraigned and held in Luzerne County Correctional Facility in lieu of $150,000 cash bail. His preliminary hearing will be Oct. 6 at 10 a.m. in Central Court, Wilkes-Barre.
