Fifteen families in Susquehanna County filed a federal lawsuit against Cabot Oil and Gas Corp. on Thursday, saying the Texas-based natural gas operator damaged their property and health while drilling for gas in the Marcellus Shale.
The families, who live in an area around Carter Road in Dimock Twp. and have gas leases with Cabot, say contamination and pollution caused by Cabot's activities has made some of them physically sick, fouled their drinking water and diminished their property values.

DICKSON CITY - The winners of the Archbald and Throop mayor and Taylor council races stayed the same after manual recounts were completed Thursday.
Incumbent Archbald Mayor Ed Fairbrother won with 1,289 votes to 1,093 for David Moran, a write-in challenger.
In Taylor, the winners of four council seats were James Digwood, 1,163; Gene King, 876; Edward W. Derenick, 804; and John J. Tigue, 781. The other candidates and their vote totals were Councilman George Aulisio, 767, and Michael Kamierczak, 739.

Both sides are claiming victories after a judge's ruling on arbitration awards granted to Scranton's police and fire unions in the past year.
For the unions, the decision by visiting Monroe County Judge Peter O'Brien brings their members another step closer to securing hard-fought pay increases.
The arbitration had called for wage increases every six months from Jan. 1, 2008, through Jan. 1, 2014. While Judge O'Brien ruled raises should be given only once a year over that period, he upheld an initial increase of 8 percent retroactive to Jan. 1, 2008, followed by a 3 percent increase retroactive to Jan. 1, 2009.

A city woman who told police she was assaulted and robbed of $600 in a Mall at Steamtown parking garage last weekend fabricated the story, investigators said Thursday.
Lisa Marie Pascucci, 40, confessed during an interview with Detectives Michael Schultz and James Pappas that she panicked when she lost the money and concocted the robbery story because she didn't know what to do, police said.
Ms. Pascucci will be charged by summons with false reports to law enforcement authorities, Police Chief David Elliott said.

There's not a reindeer in the bunch, but the critters Neil and Vonnie Young are bringing to the 17th annual Greater Scranton Jaycees Santa Parade on Saturday are old hands at spreading cheer, holiday and otherwise.
The proprietors of the nonprofit Young's Funny Farm in Berwick, who are making their second-straight appearance in the downtown parade, provide animals for pet-therapy programs during visits to hospitals, nursing homes and similar facilities.

On Thursday, the state Department of Health released a 2 minute and 50 second video, complete with catchy lyrics in a mix of hip-hop and pop, that focuses on five things children can do to keep from getting and spreading the virus.
