Burglary, break-in attempt probed

SCRANTON - City police were investigating a burglary at one West Scranton business and an attempted break-in at another early Monday.

Burglars made off with a large quantity of cigarettes from West Side Deli, 238 N. Main Ave., after smashing the glass in the front door just before 5:30 a.m., police said. The owner was doing an inventory to determine if anything else was missing.

About three hours earlier, there was an attempted break-in at Pantry Quik Convenience Store, 2127 Washburn St., police said. A review of video surveillance showed two men trying to pry open a rear door, although they did not gain entry.

Wonder what they looked like?? I can bet you that they are not white, if they were they would be listed as such in this paper.

These are burglaries that are occurring on two main streets in the west side. The one on Main Avenue was through a front door. This is what happens when you reduce the size of your department. No beat officers, no bicycle patrols, no protection. The sole patrols are two one officer cars who have to cover the entire zone and have time to be proactive only when they are not on a call. Doesn't work. But your mayor wants to make cuts. He wants to realign manpower with his management rights. The times these burglaries occurred were during the hours the so-called experts recommend less officers. Support your police, don't vilify them.
